NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC:

THE FJORD AND THE FUTURE, 2021

In Kvalsund in the north of Norway, the mineral company Nussir has been given the green light to build a zero-emission copper mine and dump the waste in the Repparfjord. Norwegian authorities justify the mine's construction on the grounds that the project provides a much-needed source of copper for a fully electrified, climate-friendly future. Environmentalists, local fishermen, and the Sami people fear that the mine will poison the fjord and fish and destroy reindeer's breeding and calving grounds.

How can society balance its green energy goals with concerns for indigenous peoples' rights and nature conservation?
